My Philosophy of Literacy Education

Literacy in the 21st century goes beyond reading, writing, and comprehending information within one context. I hope to cultivate a supportive learning environment in which students can work on becoming 21st century readers, writers and critical thinkers. Today's learners live in the Information Age where it is necessary to develop information literacy skills, which includes the ability to use and share information in an ethical and purposeful way. Additionally, they must develop critical thinking skills to analyze, evaluate, and verify the abundance of information that are out in the media and online. Students in my classroom will have access to multimedia texts and participate in integrated learning opportunities, which would allow them to use and sharpen their literacy skills in the curricula outside of the language arts (i.e. integrating literacy in science, social studies, etc.). Moreover, I will strive to provide students with highly differentiated and collaborative learning experiences. Students will learn from each other and participate in collaborative tasks that foster communication and teamwork skills. As a becoming teacher in the Digital Age, I see the importance of being flexible and responsive in my instructional and assessment approaches. The incorporation of technology in the classroom will enable me to support learning in the role of a facilitator. As both a facilitator and teacher in the classroom, I will strive to be adaptable in my teaching methods to meet the needs of learners growing up in a much more diverse and complex world.
